ABOUT DAN

Teacher, Writer, and Coach, Daniel Boyne has been living and working in Cambridge, Massachusetts since 1986, where he has been primarily connected to Harvard University.

After graduating from Trinity College in Hartford, CT, in 1982, Dan went on to receive an M.Ed in Adult Literacy from Harvard in 1998. He subsequently worked with undergraduates at the college as a teaching fellow for the Pulitzer Prize winning child psychologist Robert Coles, in his popular class “The Literature of Social Reflection.” Dan received a Certificate of Distinction in Teaching from the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning during this time.

Inspired by Dr. Coles and his efforts to give value to unrecognized groups of people, Boyne wrote The Red Rose Crew: A True Story of Women, Winning, and the Water(Hyperion, 2001), a book which chronicled the lives of the female athletes who came together to form the first US Women’s National Crew Team, in 1975. The book won him a Miller Lite Sports Journalism Award, a starred Kirkus Review, and a Boston Globe bestseller ranking.

After writing several essays for magazines, including The Atlantic, Harvard Magazine, and Grays Sporting Journal, he followed up with Kelly: A Father, a Son, An American Quest (Mystic Seaport, 2005), a book which depicts the rags-to-riches story of Olympic oarsman, Jack Kelly Sr., the father of actress Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco. This book won first prize in The Premier Book Awards in the category of biography in 2008.

An avid yoga and meditation teacher, Dan has also been a frequent contributor to Elephant Journal Magazine, and published work in Health and Fitness Magazine.

His first YA book, THE STONERS, will be coming out soon, and he is currently working on an autobiographical account of his own college rowing days, tentatively titled THE SEVEN SEAT. Portions of the book can be viewed on row2k.com
